Stable Family Development Centre (SFDC) is a Black-led, community-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the well-being of immigrant, refugee, newcomer, and Black women, youth, seniors, children, and families in Edmonton. We recognize that settling in a new country can present many challenges, including language barriers, unfamiliar systems, social isolation, unemployment, housing difficulties, discrimination, cultural adjustment, and limited access to essential services. SFDC provides a welcoming, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and strength-based environment where individuals and families are treated with dignity, compassion, confidentiality, and respect. We work alongside community members to help them recognize their strengths, overcome barriers, build confidence, develop practical skills, strengthen family relationships, and create stable and successful lives in Canada. Our programs and services include newcomer settlement and family support, English literacy and conversation classes, positive parenting and family development, school and education support, women’s empowerment, youth leadership and mentorship, seniors’ programs, mental-health and wellness education, anti-racism awareness, conversation circles, peer-led and in-home support, and community connection activities. We help newcomers understand and navigate government and community systems by providing information, advocacy, referrals, assistance with forms, and connections to housing, income support, healthcare, education, employment, immigration, disability, and family resources. Our parenting programs help caregivers strengthen communication, understand child development, use positive discipline, manage stress, and support children growing up with multiple cultural identities. Our youth programs create safe spaces where young people can develop leadership skills, receive mentorship, build healthy relationships, strengthen their cultural identity, and become positive contributors to their families and communities. Through our women’s programs, participants build confidence, reduce social isolation, develop leadership and employment skills, and create supportive connections. Our seniors’ programs promote active aging, financial and digital literacy, elder-abuse awareness, social participation, cultural connection, and intergenerational learning. SFDC also promotes mental wellness by reducing stigma, sharing culturally appropriate information, offering peer support, and connecting individuals and families with suitable professional and community resources. Our anti-racism workshops and community dialogues address discrimination, Islamophobia, and systemic barriers while promoting equity, inclusion, understanding, and belonging. By bringing people together through workshops, cultural celebrations, educational sessions, family activities, and community events, SFDC helps newcomers preserve their cultural identities while developing meaningful connections within the wider Edmonton community. At the heart of our work is the belief that every family deserves the opportunity to feel safe, supported, respected, and empowered. By investing in individuals and strengthening families, SFDC is helping to build healthier, more inclusive communities where everyone has an opportunity to participate, contribute, and thrive. We believe that strong families create strong communities, and we remain committed to walking alongside the people we serve as they build brighter futures for themselves, their children, and future generations.
